How to Identify Mold in Your Home

April 30, 2024

Many Americans are affected by water damage. According to Ruby Home, 14,000 Americans are affected by this daily. While they can enlist the help of a water damage restoration company, there is always the risk of mold. If you're concerned about water damage or mold in your home, here are a few signs to look out for.

Pay Attention to Foul Odors

One major sign of mold growth is the smell. Mold may exhibit a musty or earthy odor. The smell is usually pungent or unpleasant. If you notice any unusual smells in your home, your next step should be to look for any visible signs of mold, which we will discuss below.

Search for Visible Growth

When you look at your walls or your ceilings, see if you can spot any fuzzy or discolored patches on them. While they may start small, they will get larger as the mold grows. If you see any growth, you must call a professional water damage restoration company to eradicate the mold safely.

Look at Common Areas

Certain places in the home are more susceptible to mold. Your attic is one of them since water can get in through leaks in the roof after it rains. You may want to also consider checking your pipes since leaks can lead to water damage and mold. Small areas you may not think to check, like shower curtains, may hold mold growth as well since moisture can build up and make it a breeding ground for mold growth.

While there are certain things that you can do to lessen the impact of the mold, such as thorough cleaning, the best thing you can do is hire professionals to take care of the problem. They will have specialized equipment you don't have access to, including high-tech dryers that eliminate moisture in walls and carpets.

As you can see, there are many signs that mold may be growing in your home. If you smell a musty scent, see discolored patches on your walls or ceiling, or check a common area and it does have mold, you must hire professionals to remove it. Since 1977, Maxim Cleaning & Restoration has provided Omaha, NE and the surrounding areas with premium water damage and mold remediation services. We are also OSHA-certified. We are not referring to the play by Eugene O’Neill (for more information, visit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ The_Iceman_Cometh ). Ice is nice … in a drink or to skate on … but NOT in your home or business. Here in Omaha and Council Bluffs, we are all too familiar with the types of havoc that ice and fluctuating temperatures can wreak outside, in our streets and our yards. Sadly, some of us know that frozen pipes can have a devastating effect inside our homes as well. Frozen water expands, and when that ice is inside pipes, this can cause your pipes to crack. Then, once the ice melts, the water will seep out of the resulting openings. You can easily end up with a flood somewhere in your home. In light of recent extreme weather, you may have realized that there is little time left to prepare your home for winter weather. The American Red Cross recommends that homeowners drain water from swimming pools and sprinkler supply lines before temperatures drop. Hoses used outdoors should be drained and stored. Adding insulation to attics, crawl spaces and basements will also help. Another good idea is turning on an indoor faucet to a trickle in extreme freezing weather, using hot water if possible. You can also open the kitchen and bathroom sink cabinet doors on cold nights to allow the warmer air to enter those areas. The Weather Underground has additional recommendations to keep you safe during the winter months. Stock up on products to melt ice on walkways, sand for improved traction, snow shovels or other snow removal equipment, seasoned wood for your fireplace or wood-burning stove. Make sure you have adequate clothing and blankets. Have a Family Plan to follow in case of emergencies, including contacts, meeting places and steps to take. Minimize travel, but keep a disaster supply kit in your vehicle. Should you have water damage due to this or any other reason, please call MAXIM Cleaning and Restoration at 402-697-9004. We are here to serve.
